3 NFL Draft prospects the Dolphins should avoid
2. Micah Parsons, LB, Penn State
The Dolphins will be tempted to use the No. 3 pick on a potential difference-maker who can drastically improve their defense. Some NFL scouts believe Parsons has a chance to do that from his linebacker position. Miami should not be the team that gives him that opportunity with their current spot in the draft.
Again, Parsons should be a consideration for the Dolphins if they trade back and garner additional draft capital from a team desperate to move into the top three. Otherwise, the organization needs to focus its premium asset on a more premium position. Drafting linebackers in the top-5 rarely turns out to be a good decision for teams making the pick.
Parsons’ versatility as a prospect gives him a chance to buck the trend. He’s the rare college linebacker who will come into the NFL ready to contribute in coverage and rush the passer at a high level. Then again, that’s what teams believed about Isaiah Simmons in last year’s draft. The Cardinals are still waiting for the former Clemson linebacker to pay serious dividends.
Instead of filling a need at linebacker in Round 1, the Dolphins need to look at a position that enjoys greater emphasis around the NFL. Selecting a top-notch wide receiver would be a much better use of the team’s draft resources.
