3 NFL Draft prospects the Dolphins should avoid
1. Zach Wilson, QB, BYU
Dolphins’ General Manager Chris Grier has already come out and declared that Tua Tagovailoa will be the team’s 2021 starter at quarterback. Despite that statement, rumors continue to swirl that Miami may entertain the idea of drafting a new signal-caller at No. 3.
It makes sense for the Dolphins to spend another high pick on a quarterback if they have a chance to select a superior prospect to Tagovailoa. Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields both have the raw talent to justify selection in the top three. Zach Wilson falls just short of that lofty mark.
There’s a lot to like about Wilson as a prospect. He’s got a big arm that allows him to push the ball down the field in impressive fashion. He also demonstrated excellent accuracy at the collegiate level that should allow him to be an efficient NFL thrower.
The downside to Wilson is that he lacks the elite physical traits to really project as an All-Pro quarterback down the line. In many ways, he’s too similar to Tagovailoa as a prospect to deserve to be selected to overtake him on the Dolphins depth chart.
Wilson makes a lot of sense for teams drafting in the 5-10 range in Round 1, but the Dolphins shouldn’t have any interest in selecting him at No. 3 to supplant Tua. He’s a temptation Miami must avoid.
