Adrian Peterson wants to join the Buccaneers because of Tom Brady

Tom Brady’s arrival in Tampa triggered an influx of veterans joining him, and Adrian Peterson would like to be next.

When Tom Brady chose the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last offseason, they instantly became a desirable landing spot. Rob Gronkowski came out of retirement, LeSean McCoy signed, Leonard Fournette landed there after being waived. Antonio Brown signed, and eventually played after serving a suspension.

Gronkowski joining Brady with the Buccaneers invited fun speculation about who else should unretire to play there. But the more realistic influx of name-brand veterans followed. Now, another big name wants in on the Tampa Bay ring-pursuing party.

Adrian Peterson wants to play for the Buccaneers, if they’ll have him

Adrian Peterson has done a lot in his career. He’s fifth all-time in rushing yards (14,820), with a 2,000-yard season and a league MVP that same year (2012). But he has never played in a Super Bowl, let alone won one. He’s set to be a free agent after spending the 2020 season with the Detroit Lions, and he’s got a spot in mind.

In comments to TMZ, Peterson said he’d like to play for the Buccaneers and with Brady.

“That would definitely be something I’m interested in,” Peterson says … explaining “If they want me to be a part of it, I’ll be a part of it for sure. Because I’m definitely trying to add a trophy to my resume.”

“Playing with Tom Brady, that by itself is enticing.”

Peterson played for Buccaneers’ head coach Bruce Arians with the Arizona Cardinals in 2017, so there’s some familiarity there. But Peterson doesn’t seem to fit well in the Tampa Bay backfield, with Ronald Jones coming back and bringing Fournette back a likely priority over pursuing outside veteran options.

Ultimately, it will come down to what Brady wants. If he wants Peterson to essentially replace Fournette, against logic and who’s the better player at this point, then it has a chance to get done. Otherwise, Peterson will be extending his career elsewhere next season.
