New York Giants free agency 2021: Top 5 targets
2. Hunter Henry
Landing a top wide receiver isn’t the only way the Giants can improve their passing game this offseason. Giving Jones a more sure-handed tight end to work with could also pay big dividends.
Evan Engram flashes the ability to become one of the best receiving tight ends in the NFL, but he drops far too many passes to really keep the Giants’ offense humming at a high level. New York could have greatly benefited from Henry reeling in the 11 passes he dropped in 2020.
Henry is clearly the best tight end headed for free agency this offseason. He may never turn into the consistent All-Pro the Chargers envisioned when they drafted him, but he’s going to give his next team solidly above-average production on an annual basis. New York would benefit greatly from his ability to stretch opposing secondaries down the seam.
The question here is whether or not Henry would give the team enough of an upgrade over Engram to justify the premium he is going to demand in free agency. That’s a decision the Giants’ coaching staff needs to make based on their knowledge of Engram’s work ethic and mental toughness. If they can’t trust him to bounce back, it’s time to splash some cash on a new starter at tight end. Henry is the only guy who deserves that kind of money in this year’s free agent class.
