Packers: 3 players Green Bay can replace Kevin King with at cornerback
By John Buhler
If it worked with Charles Woodson back in the day, it could work again
Let’s be real. Even if the Packers do take a cornerback in at No. 29 in the draft, we have no earthly idea if he will be the least bit good as a rookie. Because Green Bay does not have any more time to mess around with Aaron Rodgers’ diminishing prime, they need to go get the 2020s defensive equivalent of Charles Woodson to help them win a championship. Joe Barry may know a guy.
For years, Patrick Peterson has starred in the same NFC West where Barry was prior to coming to Green Bay. While Barry served on Sean McVay’s defensive staff with the Los Angeles Rams, he had to be amazed by what he saw with Peterson on the Arizona Cardinals. Though he is only in his early 30s, Peterson is not expected to be returning to the Valley of the Sun for a ninth season.
Though Green Bay does not typically participate in free agency, the Packers front office needs to get over itself and join the rest of the league. They have a Pro Football Hall-of-Famer at quarterback, one who is rapidly approaching 40 years of age. Do you want to win another Super Bowl championship with Rodgers or not? The clock is ticking and you need to make a move.
Peterson may no longer be a perennial Pro Bowler, but he is destined for Canton already. Though he would be leaving a playoff-caliber team in Glendale, he could be joining a team that could get him a Lombardi Trophy. Even if Peterson is not the second coming of Woodson, maybe he can be what Richard Sherman was for the San Francisco 49ers after leaving the Seattle Seahawks?
Whether the Packers go after someone like Horn or Melifonwu in the 2021 NFL Draft or hope they can land a future Pro Football Hall-of-Famer like Peterson in free agency, they have to do something to solve their defensive back problem fit for a King. Green Bay could look to run it back with him on a second contract, but the Packers have plenty of options to consider this offseason.
What should the Packers do to potentially offset losing King in 2021 NFL free agency?
