Philadelphia Eagles free agency 2021: Top 5 targets
2. Marcus Maye
Cornerback isn’t the only spot in the secondary where the Eagles need help. The team can also benefit from an upgrade at safety. Fortunately for Philadelphia’s front office, this year’s free agent class is full of quality options at that position.
Guys like Anthony Harris and Justin Simmons are in line for big deals which could allow a talent like Maye to slip through the cracks. He put together an excellent season after Jamal Adams was traded to Seattle. He doesn’t have that high of a ceiling as a player, but Maye comfortably profiles as an above-average starter at free safety for the foreseeable future.
Next year will represent Maye’s age-27 season, which does mean the Eagles should be careful about giving him a long-term deal. He’s got the type of game that should age reasonably well, but nothing over four years should be offered.
Even at that length of time, it could turn into a bargain contract for Philadelphia. Safeties aren’t getting big money in the modern NFL and there could be four or five potential players at his position slotted ahead of him in this class. The Eagles would be wise to ignore the bigger names and focus on Maye as a guy who can give them an immediate upgrade in the secondary at a reasonable price.
