Raiders free up a ton of cap space by cutting Tyrell Williams
The Las Vegas Raiders are reportedly planning to release wideout Tyrell Williams and will free up a ton of cap space in the process.
Things just didn’t quite work out for speedy wide receiver Tyrell Williams with Jon Gruden and the Las Vegas Raiders. While the team had high hopes for him, Williams missed the entire 2020 campaign due to shoulder surgery. Now, he won’t be suiting up for them in 2021 either.
That’s because, per a report, the team is planning to release him at the start of the league year coming next month. With the Raiders cutting their losses here, they’ll also be freeing up quite a bit of money to make some moves this offseason.
The Raiders are freeing up more than $10 million in cap space by releasing Tyrell Williams
Per NFL insider Ian Rapoport, the Raiders will be freeing up $11.5 million in cap space once the release of Williams becomes official. That’s a pretty penny and will definitely open some things up for Las Vegas in the coming months when they start looking at free agents to go after.
As for Williams, the hunt for a new team will begin shortly too. The 28-year-old pass-catcher first started making plays for the Chargers back in 2015. He had a breakout campaign in 2016, catching 69 balls for 1,059 yards and seven touchdowns. After four years with the Chargers, he joined the Raiders in 2019. That year, he posted 42 receptions for 651 yards and six scores.
After sitting out 2020 due to his shoulder surgery, Williams is no doubt chomping at the bit to get back on the practice field and have a big year in 2021. Unfortunately for him, it won’t be coming in Sin City. We’ll see which team decides to take a chance on the 6-foot-4, 205-pounder.
