March Madness seed reveal – Key takeaways

Now that we’ve looked at the Top 16, let’s take a look at some key takeaways.

The next four teams

Barnhart cited USC and Florida State as two teams that were clearly in the conversation for the Top 16, which is particularly interesting since the Trojans just entered the polls this week. A few unnamed Big Ten schools also received consideration, which would probably be Wisconsin and one of Indiana, Purdue and Rutgers.

Pac-12 shutout

The Pac-12 placed no teams in this seed list, with USC coming the closest. The conference has been on a downturn for the past few years and this year’s performance hasn’t done much to change its reputation with the selection committee.

Conference tournaments

The topic of conference tournaments, which has become a hot-button issue in recent years, was brought up on the CBS broadcast. Dan Gavitt pointed out that the NCAA is advising any leagues that hold a conference tournament to encourage all teams that qualify to participate to help with seeding for the NCAA Tournament.

Fans at the NCAA Tournament?

When asked if there would be fans at March Madness, Barnhart said that they are already planning to have guests of the players and coaches in attendance. The NCAA Is currently in contact with local health officials to try and work out an agreement to have limited capacity for fans at the games.
