2. Sam Ehlinger

If the Saints look toward April’s draft for a possible long-term solution under center, they are likely to wind up waiting until the later rounds to do it. That would put someone like Ehlinger on the radar.

With similar size and running ability, Ehlinger is easy to compare to Hill. The difference is Ehlinger can capably throw the ball too, with 83 touchdown passes and 20 interceptions along with a completion rate just under 64 percent over his final three seasons at Texas.

At the Senior Bowl, Ehlinger spoke about a quarterback he looked up to (and shares a high school alma mater with).

“Growing up having Drew Brees as a model, as a man and a player, is one of the best players and people you can look up to when you’re at a young age watching a football player,” Ehlinger said. “I never really had a professional team but I was always into the players. So when I knew that Drew Brees went to the same high school that I was going to go to, being able to watch him every Sunday play for the Saints, just the way he carries himself as a person and a player, it was the perfect role model to look up to.”

Ehlinger looking up to Brees is obviously not nearly the same as the Saints thinking he should be their quarterback of the future. But even the notion a fifth or sixth-round pick is already a better quarterback than Hill, along with being more experienced with 43 college starts on his resume, says it all about Hill.
