Top 5 quarterback prospects in the 2021 NFL Draft
1. Trevor Lawrence
Make no mistake about it, Lawrence is the sort of generational quarterback prospects that a lot of scouts claim him to be. There’s zero question that he should be the Jaguars’ pick at No. 1.
Lawrence possesses good size and elite arm strength to succeed at the next level. There are, however, other quarterbacks who can rival him in those areas.
No one can touch Lawrence when it comes to processing information rapidly in the pocket and getting the ball out of his hands to the right receiver with astounding accuracy. He’s a savant when it comes to reading coverages quickly. NFL defensive coordinators will not be able to overwhelm him with exotic blitzes or coverages once he’s able to get his feet under him as a professional.
Critics of the former Clemson standout might quibble with Lawrences’ lack of elite athleticism outside the pocket, but Tom Brady isn’t exactly a world-class sprinter. He’s got more than enough foot speed to escape trouble and punish defenses when they forget about his rushing ability.
Add it all up and Lawrence is an exceptional example of a quarterback who is ready to play at a high-level right away and has a chance to continue to progress into one of the best players in the league. “Tanking for Trevor” was an understandable strategy for the Jaguars due to Lawrence’s prodigious talent.
