2. Jhoulys Chacin

Chacin is the definition of a flier that has a chance to pay off as a back-of-the-rotation starter for the Yankees. He hasn’t been a quality big league hurler since 2018, but he did make 35 starts with an ERA of 3.50 for the Brewers that year.

The Yankees hope they don’t have to rely on Chacin at any point, but the injury histories of guys ahead of them on the starting pitching depth chart make it a distinct possibility. Corey Kluber threw a grand total of one inning last season. That’s one more than Jameson Taillon managed.

Youngsters like Deivi Garcia and Clarke Schmidt also carry a fair amount of risk heading into the regular season due to their inexperience. If a significant portion of those guys falter, Chacin could make his way onto the big league roster with a strong showing in Spring Training.

Yankee fans should hope that Chacin’s services aren’t required in the Bronx this season, but the organization signed him for a reason. They understand how valuable Chacin can be as a potential insurance policy.
