1. Travis Etienne, Running Back, Clemson

There’s zero doubt that Etienne could be a highly productive running back in Green Bay. He would be a great alternative to Dillon as a guy who can run the ball effectively and make plays in the passing game.

The Packers still shouldn’t spend a first round pick to acquire him. Fortunately for fans in Green Bay, he’ll likely be off the board before they go on the clock at No. 31. Even if he does fall this far, this should not be the team to stop his slide.

Green Bay’s front office needs to avoid the sin of spending high picks on the running back position in consecutive drafts. Spending a second rounder on Dillon last year was a clear mistake. Trying to double down on that flawed philosophy by acquiring Etienne in Round 1 this season would show a troubling lack of understanding of value in the modern NFL.

There are teams that can afford to defy conventional wisdom and spend a first round selection on a dynamic back like Etienne in this year’s draft. The Packers just aren’t one of them. They need to focus on a position of higher value around the NFL with their most valuable draft asset.
