3 prospects that should make Red Sox Opening Day roster
By Scott Rogust
The Red Sox have undergone a complete overhaul in the outfield. Mookie Betts was infamously traded to the Los Angeles Dodgers prior to the start of last season, where he immediately won a World Series title. Andrew Benintendi was traded this past month to the Kansas City Royals in exchange for five players in the three-team deal also including the New York Mets. Finally, Jackie Bradley Jr. is a free agent, but it does not appear the Red Sox have a desire to re-sign him.
As of this writing, Boston will go with an outfield consisting of Alex Verdugo, Hunter Renfroe and Franchy Cordero. But what about some depth options? How about prospect Jarren Duran?
Boston’s eighth-ranked prospect in the pipeline is known for his speed and his ability to make contact in the batter’s box. Back in 2019 across Single-A+ and Double-A, Duran slashed .303/.367/.408 with five home runs, 38 RBI, 90 runs scored and 157 hits. As a baserunner, he stole a staggering 46 bases.
Duran is becoming a popular name in the Red Sox organization. In fact, manager Alex Cora said this Saturday that Duran will be playing with the big league club this Spring Training, per Jason Mastrodonato of the Boston Herald. The question remains, regardless of his performance, if the Red Sox will name Duran to the Opening Day roster for service times purposes.
Either way, Duran is a name to keep an eye on in 2021.
