3 prospects that should make Cubs Opening Day roster
1. Brennen Davis
This is the ultimate should but won’t of this list. Brennen Davis is a 2018 second-round pick who last played in Class-A ball back in 2019. Is it still a stretch? That would be fair to say.
Davis lands on this list because he is seen as one of the top prospects in the organization. He batted .305 in limited action in 2019 and had all of 2020 to work on his game. If there was no concept of service time to worry about, he could be eased into action and the Cubs could see what he needs to work on.
But there is no chance of Davis opening the season with the Cubs. The team added Joc Pederson and they are going to want to see where Davis is at after a year away from game action. He is still someone fans should keep an eye on because it is possible he rises through the system faster than expected.
Spending time training at the team’s alternate site in 2020 could end up being beneficial for Davis. He got to work directly with coaches and face-off against MLB-ready pitching on a daily basis. So if the Cubs were in a full rebuild maybe he would be up early during the 2021 season.
For now, he is a top prospect who the team can potentially call up late in the season or just wait until 2022 to begin his service time clock then.
