DeMar DeRozan

Much like the San Antonio Spurs, DeMar DeRozan is in a weird transition phase where the glory days of old are behind him and a new chapter awaits. He’ll be a free agent soon, and the Spurs will probably turn it over to their promising young core at that point. At 31 years old, this very well could be DeRozan’s last shot at an All-Star selection.

However, overlooking what he — or the sneaky-good Spurs at 16-11 — has done feels like a mistake. DeRozan was certainly worthy of consideration, because even though his scoring numbers (19.8 points per game) are down, he’s reinvented himself as a lead playmaker, averaging a career-high 6.9 assists to go with 5.0 rebounds a night.

Ultimately though, as much as the Spurs are in the playoff hunt and DeRozan has been the biggest architect behind that success, neither his numbers nor San Antonio’s record are quite good enough to warrant a spot over the guys who got in.

Verdict: Correct call
