1. Eric Rowe

The Dolphins’ defense is in great shape. The young players in the front seven are mixing very well with the veterans. Xavien Howard has become one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL. The only real weakness here is safety. This is where the Dolphins will make a major splash in the draft.

There are some very interesting safeties in this draft. Trevon Moehrig might be the best choice for the Phins. Is it too high to take him at No.18? This might be a really good trade-down scenario for the Dolphins. Either way, the Dolphins could turn that pick into a star safety.

Eric Rowe is currently holding on to the Dolphins starting strong safety position, but after this offseason that seems unlikely. He’s a nice piece to have, but he’s been in the league long enough to know he’s not the answer at the position. He is a good option to have in nickel or dime, but to put him down for every snap seems like a mistake.

Just a few weeks ago, the Miami Herald reported the Dolphins are evaluating the safety position. That’s not good news for the player who’s currently the starter.

Rowe also comes with a $4 million cap savings if the Dolphins cut him. Replacing him with a rookie seems like the long-term solution at the position. There are other interesting safeties that could be good in the second round like Jevon Holland and Hamsah Nasirildeen.

Tyree Gillespie out of Missouri is someone who could surprise people as a middle-round pick, but he’s likely not ready to jump into the starting lineup.
