A Russell Wilson trade to the Cowboys remains unlikely, but what would it take?

The Cowboys are committed to Dak Prescott — a fact I’ll repeat several times in this piece. However, what if Jerry Jones decided to go all-in and pull the trigger on a Wilson trade? Jones has gone rogue before, and he’s constantly looking for his vision of what a franchise quarterback should look like. Let’s pretend Prescott doesn’t fit that definition, either due to injury or contract status. Unfortunately for the Cowboys, they can’t just trade Prescott to Seattle — he’d have to approve that destination before signing the franchise tag.

But, letting Prescott walk and trading for Wilson remains a technical possibility.

Could the Dallas Cowboys trade for Russell Wilson?

It’s the Cowboys money, so they can opt to pay Prescott, or pay Wilson but send a couple first-round picks to Dallas. That’s where negotiations would start, of course.

The Cowboys have a few choices. Any trade would start with their No. 10 overall pick. Dallas could also trade the likes of Michael Gallup, or even Jaylon Smith, who is one season removed from a Pro Bowl campaign. Rather than forfeiting one of Wilson’s potential offensive weapons in Dallas, they could throw in a defensive pillar for the Seahawks to build around. That would also lessen the draft capital necessary to acquire Wilson. Two firsts and Smith could do the trick, but that second first could be conditional, if necessary.

And who knows? That alone might not be enough to acquire Wilson. He’s a top-5 quarterback in the NFL when at his best. But if Jones and the Cowboys front office truly believes they’re one Russell Wilson away from Super Bowl contention, then a starting offer of the following could help:

The Cowboys remain several pieces away from a significant playoff run, but 2020 feels like more of an apparition. If they’re set on Wilson, it’ll cost them…perhaps more than even I’ve theorized.
