Was Beat Street filmed in New York City?

The ’80s was as a grimmey time frame for the city of New York. However, through all the crime and hiccups the city was going through, there was some shine of light—the emergence of hip hop culture. The culture contains various elements that include graffiti, b-boying, MCing, DJing, amongst others that are also considered.

This flick contains all of those elements plus a story that holds some truth to the lifestyle back then. The underground scenes in the subway stations were filmed at Fresh Pond Road on the border of Queens and Brooklyn, 57th Street and Sixth Avenue in Manhattan, and the Hoyt-Schermerhorn subway station. Several dance battles were shot at Roxy NYC, or simply The Roxy, which stands today at West 18th Street in Chelsea.

The roller skating rink and disco was made popular during the ’80s for hosting various b-boy dance battles amongst different crews. Despite it still standing to this day, it has been shut down since 2007. There was word that it could be demolished at some point.
