Was The Godfather filmed in New York City?

What would this list be without the iconic Mario Puzo novel-based 1972 film? With the direction of Francis Ford Coppola, he was able to bring such a powerful story to the big screen—especially during those years. With a star-studded cast that included the late great Marlon Brando, a young Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duvall, and the late Abe Vigoda, to name a few, it’s no mystery as to why this movie has remained a fan favorite four decades later.

The best part about this film is that a lot of it was shot right here in NY. Remember the infamous scene where Michael shoots Sollozzo and the corrupted cop McClusky? That was Louis Restaurant, which is really Old Luna Restaurant located in The Bronx.

That was a powerful scene because it eventually led to the breakout of the family wars. The Corleone mansion was located on Staten Island, and a good portion of the film was actually shot at Filmways Studios, which was located at 127th Street in East Harlem. For a film that critically acclaimed, it’s got to make New Yorkers feel very proud that its setting is based right here.
