2. CB Avonte Maddox

Maddox was part of a litany of injuries in the Eagles’ secondary last season, missing a total of six games when it was all said and done. When he was on the field, he wasn’t that good opposite Darius Slay as a boundary corner (zero interceptions, 108.3 passer rating allowed, 8.8 yards per target allowed). A lack of size (5-foot-9, 184 pounds) is easily exposed playing on the outside.

The Eagles seem to have plenty of depth in the secondary if people are healthy, and they could draft some younger, cheaper players. Keeping Maddox is not necessary from a roster standpoint, even if they have an eye on moving him to what seems to be a better spot for him–free safety.

Cutting Maddox would clear $2.183 million of his $2.339 million cap hit, with is the third-highest cap hit in the Eagles’ secondary right now (behind Darius Slay and Rodney McCleod). So there’s a little bit to gain in relation to the cap, which is something for the Eagles to consider, while freeing room for a better player who’ll be cheaper. The move to cut Maddox makes sense all the way around, even if it’s not big money relief.
