CB. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. Pittsburgh Steelers. Steven Nelson. 2,. player. 55

With the Steelers needing as much cap space as possible, it is entirely possible that the Steelers could make the tough choice in parting ways with cornerback Steven Nelson.

The Steelers signed Nelson to a three-year, $25.5 million contract back in 2019, and he missed all but two games during his tenure in Pittsburgh. This past season as one of the top cornerbacks on the depth chart, Nelson recorded 48 combined tackles, nine passes defended, two interceptions and one fumble recovery. In coverage, Nelson allowed 57 completions for 732 yards and seven touchdowns on 98 targets, per Pro Football Reference.

Nelson carries a $14.4 million cap hit for the Steelers in 2021, but the team could try to sign him to a contract extension with the purpose of lowering that number. But if the Steelers can not do so, cutting Nelson would free up $8.25 million in space.

This is a tough choice, as the Steelers could also choose to cut ties with offensive guard David DeCastro. Even though the offensive lineman accounts for $14.3 million against the cap, it is hard to see the Steelers parting ways with him. Why get rid of a starting offensive lineman with an aging quarterback set to return for at least one more season?

But, Nelson could be spared in favor of cutting another defensive back.
