If, as expected, the Steelers pass on giving Bud Dupree a lucrative new contract this offseason, then replacing him in Round 1 seems like a solid bet. Collins is just the sort of outside linebacker prospect who can thrive in Pittsburgh’s defensive system.

What really makes Collins pop on film is his ability to rush the passer on the edge. Pittsburgh’s staff can help him become more efficient by adding some more pass-rushing moves to his repertoire, but his sheer speed and force on the perimeter give him a chance to be successful right away.

Long-term, the idea that Collins can also evolve into a solid option in pass-coverage is what should excite Mike Tomlin’s coaching staff. Outside linebackers who can blitz and cover at a high level are worth their weight in gold in the modern NFL.

Collins isn’t a great fit for every NFL defense, but he’s tailor-made for what Pittsburgh needs from their outside linebackers. 24 might be too early to draft him in a vacuum, but his scheme fit for the Steelers makes him a solid selection for them in Round 1.
