Buffalo Bills full 2021 NFL mock draft
The Bills won’t draft the hometown running back for purely sentimental reasons. Instead, they’ll view Patterson as a versatile rusher who can add an extra dimension to their offense.
Patterson’s speed isn’t going to show up in the NFL the same way as he did in college, but he’s still got enough burst to be productive on the interior. His skill set might be a little duplicative with Zack Moss, but he can free Buffalo up to let T.J. Yeldon walk in free agency.
Drafting Van Lanen in Round 7 isn’t going to help the Bills if they lose Daryl Williams in free agency, but the former Wisconsin star can add valuable depth to Buffalo’s offensive line. The power he played with for the Badgers’ run game should really appeal to McDermott and his offensive coaching staff.
Van Lanen would be drafted much higher if teams felt more comfortable with his ability to handle edge rushers in space. His lack of mobility and bend on the edge is an issue. He’s still a solid value for the Bills in the seventh round.
