2021 NFL Mock Draft: How does Dak Prescott’s new deal affect first round?
By Brad Weiss
The Dallas Cowboys finally paid Dak Prescott, agreeing with their franchise quarterback on a monster contract on Monday, avoiding franchise tagging him. Prescott has proven that he can be an excellent player at the NFL level, and now that he is under contract for the long haul, they need to put some more talent in front of him along the offensive line.
Rashawn Slater is a player seen by many as being a legitimate first-round prospect, and some feel he could be the second offensive tackle off the board. If that is the case, the Cowboys should definitely consider bringing him in, as they have to protect Prescott, who showed his value after being injured last season.
Staying with the NFC East, the New York Giants are another team coming off a rough season, but one who got great play from their defense. In fact, the defense kept them in the playoff hunt up until the last week of the season and is a unit they are going to have to rely on once again to get to the top of the NFC East next season.
On offense, Daniel Jones is a guy who still has question marks surrounding him as to whether or not he is a legitimate franchise quarterback. To figure that out, the Giants are going to have to bring in some elite talent around him this offseason, and if Jaylen Waddle is still available, they should not overthink the selection.
The San Francisco 49ers are another team that could be in play for a quarterback this offseason, that is if they do not believe that Jimmy Garoppolo is their franchise guy moving forward. Jimmy G recently led this franchise to a Super Bowl, so they should stand pat at that position group, turning their attention to the defense with pick No. 12 overall.
With this pick, the 49ers need to bring in a player to bolster their secondary, and Caleb Farley is not only an incredible athlete but arguably the best cover corner in this draft class. He would jump in and start right away as a rookie, and with Richard Sherman leaving via free agency, there is a void that needs to be filled at the cornerback spot.
