3 surprise cuts the Panthers could make this offseason
1. QB Teddy Bridgewater
Roughly a year ago, the organization opted to part ways with veteran quarterback Cam Newton. He had dealt with a shoulder injury in the second half of 2018 and after two games the following year, he was shelved for the remainder of ‘19 with an ankle issue.
Meanwhile, the Panthers went out and signed quarterback Teddy Bridgewater to a three-year, $63 million dollar contract (via Spotrac). He went onto play and start 15 games for Matt Rhule’s team, hitting on 69.1 percent of his passes for 3,733 yards, 15 scores, 11 interceptions and three lost fumbles He was also the club’s second-leading rusher with 279 yards and he reached the end zone five times. Jonathan M. Alexander of the Charlotte Observer takes a look at the good and the bad when it comes to the resourceful signal-caller.
But there have been whispers of the Panthers’ interest in other quarterbacks, for what it is worth. Deshaun Watson to Carolina has been floated out there, even though the Texans insist their talented four-year pro isn’t going anywhere.
Could Rhule and the Panthers indeed move on from Bridgewater after one year and only 15 outings? You get the sense that nothing will be that shocking this offseason.
