25 former college football players destined to be future head coaches
By Dante Pryor
21. Jake Venables, Clemson linebacker
If Jake Venables decides to become a coach after playing, he will join a long line of sons who become coaches like their fathers. Legendary head coach Bobby Bowden had two sons, Terry and Tommy, get into coaching.
Hall of fame coach Lou Holtz’s son Skip is the head coach at Louisiana Tech. Charile Weiss, Jr. is the offensive coordinator at Florida Atlantic and Shane Beamer (son of Frank Beamer) is the new head coach at the University of South Carolina.
What’s most interesting about sons going into coaching has been their ability to carve out their own niche despite the shadow of their fathers. Venables could very well do the same after his playing days are over.
If Venables decides to become a defensive coach, he’s sat under one of the best defensive coaches in the modern era; his father, Brent. The younger Venables could decide to try offense; few offensive coordinators were better than Tony Elliot in the college game.
Venables has already learned how to watch and break down film from being around his father growing up. Venables loves the game and could have a bright future after he hangs up the shoulder pads.
