Chiefs rumors, Joe Thuney

2. Joe Thuney

Thuney is the best guard available in free agency after Washington’s decision to place the franchise tag on Brandon Scherff. He may not be an elite pass blocker, but his ability to open up holes for Kansas City’s run game could take a ton of heat off of Mahomes.

The fact that Thuney hasn’t missed a single game in his pro career should also appeal to the Chiefs. After all, injuries derailed their title hopes last year. Thuney is a guy they can comfortably pencil in as a starter every week.

Thuney’s versatility on the interior could do a lot to balance out Kansas City’s attack. He’s not a mauler on the inside, but he does an exceptional job of using leverage to knock opposing defensive tackles out of the way. That skill should endear him to Reid immediately.

Signing Thuney won’t be cheap, but the Chiefs need to spend every dollar and resource they can to keep Mahomes upright in 2021 and beyond. Taking him away from the Patriots would be a quality victory for Kansas City’s front office.
