2. Jalen Mayfield

Mayfield splits opinion in the NFL scouting community because of concerns over whether or not he can hold up at tackle. That’s where he played the majority of his snaps at Michigan, but it’s entirely possible he needs to kick inside at guard to maximize his potential at the pro level.

Again, the Chiefs are a team that needs help in both spots. Concerns over where Mayfield might line up shouldn’t concern them at No. 31. Mayfield’s excellent combination of size, speed, and power should help him flourish if he lands in Kansas City.

At the very least, the Chiefs would be wise to give him a chance to start his NFL career at right tackle. There’s nothing about his athletic profile that suggests he can’t handle that responsibility. His lack of reps at Michigan might mean he needs a season to really handle the rigors of NFL competition, but his upside is worth exercising that kind of patience.

Mayfield likely won’t be ready to help the Chiefs Week 1, but he could be a high-quality starter by the time the postseason rolls around. That’s really all that should matter for Kansas City given where they are as a franchise.
