3 free agents Packers could have signed with Aaron Jones’ money
1. Fortify the defense with Haason Reddick
J.J. Watt wasn’t the only free agent pass rusher capable of strengthening Green Bay’s front seven. Landing a guy who can torment opposing quarterbacks from the perimeter should still be a huge offseason priority for the Packers.
It’s always possible the team can address that need via the draft, but the sheer quantity of edge rushers available in free agency makes that a more prudent strategy. A speed guy like Reddick could be the perfect addition to help the Packers protect leads in 2021.
It took Reddick several years to find his niche in the NFL, but once the Cardinals turned him loose on the perimeter his athleticism really started to pop. He’s not going to give his new team a ton in terms of run defense or coverage, but he can win one-on-one battles against offensive tackles on the edge.
Reddick can likely be had for a one-year deal that will pay him less than Jones is going to make per season. If the former Arizona star turns into a double-digit sack guy that’s going to be a monster value for the team that signs him. It should have been Green Bay.
