5 players Eagles should draft in the first round
1. Trey Lance
Lance is the consensus No. 4 quarterback in this year’s draft class but he still has a strong chance of being a top-8 pick. The Eagles would be smart to nab him at 6 if they believe he’s a meaningful upgrade over Hurts.
The former North Dakota State star understandably draws a lot of comparisons to Cam Newton based on his limited college tape. Both guys are big signal-callers who can really torment opposing defenses with their combination of size and mobility on the perimeter.
Lance doesn’t have the elite arm strength that helped Newton be the No. 1 overall pick, but he still grades out as solidly above-average in that regard. He’s got enough juice in his right arm to make every throw in Philadelphia’s playbook.
The one issue with him going to the Eagles is that he might not be ready to go Week 1 of his rookie season. The jump from FCS football to the NFL might be too much for him to handle immediately.
Philadelphia could easily select him with the idea that he can sit behind Hurts to start his professional career. He’d still join the Eagles with the expectation that he’d become their franchise quarterback sooner rather than later.
