Georgia football: Eric Stokes, Tyson Campbell flying up draft boards after Pro Day
By John Buhler
Georgia football stars Eric Stokes and Tyson Campbell showed out big time in their pro days.
Many Georgia football players looked great in their pro days, including outside linebacker Azeez Ojulari, as well as cornerbacks Tyson Campbell and Eric Stokes.
The NFL Network’s Bucky Brooks spoke glowingly about the two star UGA defensive backs on the Move the Sticks podcast on Thursday. While Ojulari is now a lock to go in the first round, Stokes has been a fast riser of late and Campbell has been a fringe first-round projection throughout the 2021 NFL Draft process. Here is what Brooks had to say about Stokes after his Georgia pro day.
“A very impressive performance, you talk about ripping off a 4.2-forty,” said Brooks. “I think when you see his athleticism, his explosiveness, combined with what you’ve watched on tape you really begin to like the player. I think a player like that, who is versatile, dynamic, explosive, and has the ability to give you special teams contributions is a hot commodity. He is going to be a hot name to follow as we get closer to the draft.”
And here is what Brooks had to say about Campbell when making a comparison to Stokes.
“(Campbell) ended up running a 4.38-forty, which is incredible at his size, but you don’t hear anything about it because of the 4.25-forty Stokes ripped off,” said Brooks. “When I watched (Stokes) I saw the speed play, I saw him be able to locate and play the ball which was impressive. A little bit of tightness, I thought, in some of his movement, so I give Campbell the edge in the movement department.”
“But Campbell didn’t find the football as well as Stokes. So to me, they’re not perfect corners but they are height/weight/speed guys that always go in the second round, that’s where these guys are going to end up.”
Georgia football could have as many as three players going in the first round
At Georgia, Stokes always had an ability to fly around in Kirby Smart’s secondary. While he could really play all over the gridiron, Campbell cut his teeth as an exceptional cover cornerback. Though he would get burnt on occasion or get flagged for a dumb penalty, you could usually trust him to lock down his receiver to allow the rest of his Georgia defensive back teammates to make plays.
Overall, Georgia could have as many as three first-round picks this spring. Ojulari is going in the first round, probably to a team picking in the early 20s like the Tennessee Titans at No. 22 or the Pittsburgh Steelers at No. 24. Campbell could go somewhere like the Jacksonville Jaguars with their second first-round pick by way of the Los Angeles Rams. Stokes could crack the top-32, too.
Georgia has long been a pro football factory and these three defensive stars could be what’s next.
