Detroit Lions full 2021 NFL mock draft
The idea of Detriot doubling up on LSU products with their first two selections should be very tempting for the team’s front office. Cox’s ability to grow into an outstanding coverage linebacker would help add much-needed versatility to Campbell’s front seven.
If Cox played with more physicality at the point of attack he’d be a lock to hear his name called in Round 1. As it stands, he has a chance to turn into a sterling value on Day 2. An apt pro comparison for Cox if things break right for his career would be a bigger, more physical Matt Milano.
Some Lions fans might wonder why the team won’t opt for a pure pass-rusher at this juncture of the draft, but Detroit should find quality value at edge rusher in the middle rounds. Cox’s ability to cover running backs, tight ends, and some slot receivers in space will also have a positive impact on the Lions’ ability to stop opposing aerial attacks.
Cox may never put up big stats as a pro, but he’s the rare college linebacker prospect who can come in and be an immediate plus in coverage. That should be too tempting for the Lions to pass up in Round 2.
