Pittsburgh Steelers fans are in the overthinking stage of the Steven Nelson sweepstakes.

Nelson is on his way out of Pittsburgh, as the 28-year-old gained permission (along with his agent) to seek a trade from the Steel City. While nothing’s been made official, it appears the Steelers chose the older Joe Haden over Nelson, opting to allow him to find a new home, and perhaps a new contract, elsewhere an offseason early.

Nelson has been a solid second cornerback for Pittsburgh, but saw his production dip last season. As he nears 30 years old, the Steelers are banking on that trend continuing, while Nelson is willing to bet on himself moving forward.

For Pittsburgh, it’s a smart move to trade Nelson now while he still has some value on the open market.

To their credit, Steelers fans have been fairly respectful towards Nelson despite the public nature of all this.

Nelson’s tweet very well could be in reaction to Adoree Jackson’s contract. Jackson, at 25 years old, is three years younger than Nelson. His three-year, $39 million deal is about $5 million more than what Nelson is scheduled to make in 2021, the final year of his deal.

The cornerback market has been plentiful this offseason, and Nelson could be the next player moved and given a lucrative new deal in the process.
