5 bold predictions for New York Yankees in 2021: Big year for Giancarlo Stanton?
2. Gleyber Torres will make fewer than 10 errors
Not much went right for Torres during the pandemic shortened 2020 campaign. He never really seemed to get his timing right at the plate after a breakout 2019 season. It was his defense, however, that really took a step back and caused significant worry for team officials.
GM Brian Cashman went on record with his belief that Torres came into camp last season out of shape. To the player’s credit, he’s looked much leaner in spring training. That added mobility has made him look much more nimble at the shortstop position.
Torres is never going to turn into a Gold Glover at short due to his lack of range, but that doesn’t mean he can’t solidify his defensive game to the point where he’s an above-average fielder. To do that, Torres needs to concentrate on making the routine plays with much more precision.
2021 should turn into a breakout campaign with the glove for Torres. He’s not going to get to every ball in the shortstop hole, but he’ll make the ordinary plays look ordinary. As a result, he’ll make fewer errors this season than he did in last year’s truncated campaign. The end result will be Torres solidifying himself as the team’s shortstop of the present.
