5 teams who would happily take Aaron Rodgers off the Packers hands
1. Las Vegas Raiders
Here’s another team that can’t fool anyone. Derek Carr is a fine quarterback, and underrated by those who want to believe. But the Raiders, despite Jon Gruden and Mike Mayock speaking well of Carr, have shown all the signs they will move on whenever they can. You don’t pursue Tom Brady last offseason, show interest in draft prospects or give Marcus Mariota an incentive-laden deal to be the backup if you have full belief in Carr.
Barring a contract extension, which would be surprising and unwise in one fair swoop, Carr is under contract through 2022. There is no dead money for the Raiders if they cut him or trade him next offseason.
The Raiders have increased their win total in each of Gruden’s three seasons back as head coach, and he’s got the security of a 10-year deal for as long as owner Mark Davis is enamored with him. But there’s still some pressure to win, after fading from the playoff picture late last year. Carr will be the guy in 2021 unless something out of the blue happens, but Gruden and Mayock may need to have a move to replace him in their pocket next offseason to save their jobs. A run at Russell Wilson is certainly possible, but Rodgers could be an option too.
