Texas Tech football legend Patrick Mahomes is hoping he can convince Chris Beard to remain the Texas Tech basketball coach amid rumors he’s the leading candidate for the Texas job.

Patrick Mahomes is doing some recruiting. No, not to attract some free agents to play with him on the Kansas City Chiefs. Rather, the Texas Tech football legend is hoping Texas Tech basketball coach Chris Beard will stick with the Red Raiders.

Beard is reportedly the leading candidate for the vacant Texas basketball job after Shaka Smart left to take the same job with the Marquette Golden Eagles.

Beard, a Texas graduate, coached as a student assistant on Tom Penders Longhorns teams and after his success at Texas Tech, is viewed as the top choice for Texas.

Patrick Mahomes may need to donate to Texas Tech to keep Chris Beard in town

After a national title game appearance and Elite Eight trip on his resume, Beard would be a dream hire for Texas basketball in their ongoing quest to become a consistently relevant program in the Big 12 and national conversation.

If Beard can win at this level at Texas Tech, then surely, he could do even bigger things in Austin, right? Well, that’s what Texas basketball fans and boosters are seemingly thinking.

Last year, Mahomes may have played a small (very small) role in recruiting Georgetown transfer Mac Maclung to campus with his tweets. Could Mahomes do it again with Beard?

If Texas offers the job and a big contract that comes with it, there may be nothing Mahomes can do to stop him from leaving. Unless Mahomes wants to use some of his NFL millions to help give Beard a new contract to stay at Texas Tech, Beard may be on the way to Austin as soon as next week.
