How could Red Raiders fans, including Mahomes, not be upset at this news? In the year prior to Beard’s arrival, Tubby Smith had guided the team to an NCAA tournament and lost to Butler before he departed for Memphis, leaving a big hole that Beard filled admirably.
Additionally, Mahomes was at the Final Four the year Beard and Texas Tech advanced and was close to the action, cheering on his alma mater in their quest for a title.
Who replaces Beard at the helm is a question that will soon be answered. For now, the fans in Lubbock, including one of their greatest athletes, have to deal with the fact that a beloved coach not only left but left for a conference opponent and an in-state rival.
