1. Do whatever it takes to go get a franchise quarterback

These two options are mutually exclusive. They are contingent on one thing, and one thing only: Do you think Drew Lock is the answer under center for the Broncos long-term? If so, then go right ahead and draft Farley, Parsons or Surtain with the No. 9 overall pick. But if not, and you are tired of dealing with the fact you have the fifth-best quarterback in the AFC West, this is what you do.

First, you must accept that you are getting at best the fourth-best quarterback prospect in this class because the Jacksonville Jaguars, the New York Jets and the San Francisco 49ers will take quarterbacks one-two-three. If that’s cool with you, then you have two options: Sit pat at No. 9 and take whoever falls to you or trade up a few spots to go get your guy. So who is that guy?

There are two quarterback prospects who could be the Broncos’ franchise savior: Justin Fields out of Ohio State and Trey Lance out of North Dakota State. One could fall to the Broncos at No. 9, but not both. This is why the Broncos need to orchestrate a trade with a team like the Atlanta Falcons picking at No. 4, or maybe even the Miami Dolphins picking at No. 6. Fields and Lance are worth it.

While Fields is more pro-ready, Lance has arguably the highest ceiling of any quarterback in this draft. You don’t have to start either of them right away, but you can. Should the Broncos stink again in 2021, that could be the end of the line for Fangio. You know what that means, right? That means you have the best job for the 2022 offseason cycle to go hire Brian Daboll or Eric Bieniemy.

Making one of these two moves on draft day will help the Broncos close the gap on the Chiefs.
