2. Trade back into the first round for TCU FS Trevon Moehrig

By now it’s no secret that Dallas must address its secondary woes. Dan Quinn is hopefully the right answer as coordinator, but the team lost more than they gained in free agency. Keanu Neal and Damontae Kazee could be standouts or they could fizzle. Outside of them, the best safety is Donovan Wilson.

Dallas must secure their future on the deep end with a rangy safety who can play right away. Look no further than the TCU product who has shown adaptability, range and hard-hitting mentality when playing the run. Moehrig is the most versatile player at the position and can help Dallas in both coverage and stopping running backs in the open field.

He also is going to be considered a mid-to-late first-round pick.

The Cowboys could secure Moehrig by trading away its second-round pick this season and potentially their third round pick in 2022. Another scenario would be to trade back in Round 1 and gain more picks to move up after their first selection with say the second-round pick offered for No. 10.

Dallas can contend right away if the defense is fixed. A safety of Moehrig’s potential could fall to them at No. 44, but will Jerry Jones be willing to let a top-notch player slip from his grip?

1. Draft a cornerback with their first pick

There’s a report that says Dallas could be interested in Florida’s Kyle Pitts. The 6-foot-6 tight end is more of a “unicorn” type player than a one-trick pony. Pitts has the intangibles of a No. 1 receiver but can also work inside and be dangerous as a blocker.

Dallas would love to add another weapon to the offense. They need a No. 1 cornerback first. That’s the end of the story.

Chidobe Awuzie left in free agency. The year before, Byron Jones said goodbye and headed to South Beach. Trevon Diggs led the team with three interceptions, but he’s better off playing the second receiver in the offense rather than the top target.

With the No. 10 pick, Dallas should have their choice of talent at the position. Alabama’s Patrick Surtain II seems to be an obvious fit after spending three seasons as a starter for the Crimson Tide and commanding respect. South Carolina’s Jaycee Horn is a physical player with skills that mirror that of Richard Sherman.

If Dallas trades back for more picks, Northwestern’s Greg Newsome II is incredibly smart in coverage and didn’t allow Big Ten receivers to bully him in off-ball schemes.

Pitts or not, Dallas needs to address the secondary. The first move they must make is adding a top cover man on the outside to slow down receivers in the NFC East.
