NFL Draft: 3 dark horse quarterbacks Steelers should take to succeed Ben Roethlisberger
By John Buhler
It all finally came together for him in his final year at Texas A&M
One player who really elevated his NFL Draft stock last college season was Texas A&M Aggies quarterback Kellen Mond. During his first three years in College Station, Mond was hit-or-miss under center for Jimbo Fisher. There would be games where Mond rose to the occasion, and there were others where he did not deliver in the big moments for the Aggies from 2017 to 2019.
However, Mond was able to put it all together for the best season in Texas A&M football in a generation. Texas A&M went 9-1 (8-1) with the only loss to eventual national champion Alabama. The Aggies were the first team out of the final College Football Playoff rankings, having to settle for the Orange Bowl. Mond and his teammates shredded the North Carolina Tar Heels in Miami.
During his senior season with Texas A&M, Mond completed 63.3 percent of his passes for 2,282 yards, 19 touchdowns and three interceptions. He also made more than a few plays with his legs, as Mond rushed for 294 yards on 74 carries for four additional touchdowns. While other quarterbacks in the Power 5 overshadowed him, Mond more than proved he can play in the NFL.
Mond will come off the board a bit earlier than Mills out of Stanford. Most see Mond as a day-two prospect. Though not expected to go in the first round, there is a snowball’s chance it could happen. While his arm strength is not his best attribute, Mond has proven he is very coachable and a leader of men from his time in college. He could go to the Steelers with a top-100 pick this year.
