Social media reacted to New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom striking out nine batters in a row in Saturday’s game against the Colorado Rockies.

The New York Mets‘ past two games have been postponed due to inclement weather, bringing their grand total of canceled games to six. The Mets had luck on Saturday, as they officially began their road series against the Colorado Rockies. Luckily for them, they had ace Jacob deGrom taking the mound.

During said game, deGrom struck out nine consecutive Rockies batters to bring him one short of tying the record set by Mets legend Tom Seaver (10). Unfortunately for deGrom, he fell just short of it in the bottom of the fifth inning after Rockies third baseman Josh Fuentes reached first on a throwing error by second baseman Jeff McNeil.

Mets: Jacob deGrom loses out on consecutive strikeout record, but still impresses vs. Rockies

With this nod, deGrom is now the ninth pitcher in MLB history to record nine consecutive strikeouts in a game, joining the likes of Max Scherzer, Jake Peavy and most recently Tyler Alexander.

After just missing out on tying the consecutive strikeouts record, the Mets got themselves in a jam. The Rockies scored three runs in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI triple from catcher Dom Nunez, a sacrifice fly from pinch hitter Yonathan Daza and a solo home run by outfielder Raimel Tapia.

The good news for deGrom is that all of those runs were unearned and the Mets came back to win 4-3 in their first game of the Saturday doubleheader. deGrom left the game after six innings logged, where he struck out a ridiculous 14 batters. To make matters that much more interesting, this is the second consecutive game in which deGrom recorded 14 strikeouts! He is simply on another level.

While deGrom missed out on joining Seaver in the history books, there is still plenty of time left for him to accomplish that feat. Given his play so far this season, we like his chances.
