1. New York Giants breakout stars – DE Dexter Lawrence

The biggest key to success for the Giants in 2020 was their defense and the unit should play a big role in New York’s fortunes in 2021. The group does need to take a leap forward to truly be a playoff contender and a big part of that will come from another evolution in Dexter Lawrence’s game.

Few fans were excited when the Giants selected Lawrence in the first round of the 2019 NFL Draft since scouts pegged him primarily as a run-stuffer in the pros. Lawrence has been an excellent run defender to this point but he has also been showcasing some potential as a pass-rusher as well.

2020 saw Lawrence put together a solid season, generating four sacks and ten quarterback hits to go along with 53 tackles and two passes defensed. Playing on a talented defensive line alongside the likes of Leonard Williams and Dalvin Tomlinson was also a help for Lawrence, who benefitted from not being the primary focus of opposing offensive coordinators.

Lawrence’s strong 2020 campaign will draw more eyes his way this season, making it important that he build on last season’s performance to become an even more dynamic presence on the Giants’ defensive line. A big leap from Lawrence could be a significant factor in making New York’s defense even more difficult for opponents to handle and he has an excellent shot to be a breakout star for the Giants this season.
