Twins release statement on Derek Chauvin trial urging justice for George Floyd
By Mark Powell
As we await Derek Chauvin verdict in regards to the murder of George Floyd at the hands of police, the Minnesota Twins released a statement in support of Floyd’s family.
The Minneapolis community has been grieving the loss of Floyd, which occurred on May 25, 2020, in difficult circumstances due to the pandemic. For Floyd’s family, the pain has surely been even more tragic, with his death played out on a national stage. Whether it be through murals, peaceful protests, or other means, the symbolism of Floyd being taken from his family far too soon has served as a national reminder of what the black community goes through on a daily basis at the hands of police, and far too often what that leads to — a dead citizen of minority background due to police brutality and racism.
The former police officer Derek Chauvin was on trial for Floyd’s murder this week, bringing these issues to the forefront once again. With that backdrop, the Minnesota Twins released a statement in support of Floyd’s family amid the chaos.
The Twins fully support George Floyd’s family
The most important part of this statement from the Twins is the sentence which reads “we hope and pray our criminal justice system provides the justice George Floyd and his family deserve.” While this is the prevailing opinion around the country from most forward-thinking individuals, for a corporate entity or sports organization to say so is a rather large sentiment.
To the Twins’ credit, they’ve been active in the Minneapolis community supporting minority communities in the wake of Floyd’s death, and more recently the tragic loss of Daunte Wright at the hands of the police.
Chauvin was found guilty on all three counts on Tuesday afternoon, hopefully bringing some solace to the Floyd family. Our thoughts remain with them in these tough times.
