3 moves the Saints must make during NFL Draft to overtake Buccaneers

If the New Orleans Saints are going to catch the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2021, it’ll be behind a loaded draft class come next week.

It’s a new day in New Orleans.

Out is Drew Brees, in is uncertainty. The Saints are likely going to start Jameis Winston under center, a year after he learned at the knee of Brees and head coach Sean Payton. However, while Winston threw for 5,000 yards in 2019 with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, he also launched an unfathomable 30 interceptions.

Speaking of the Buccaneers, they’re the reigning Super Bowl champs and the chief impediment to New Orleans getting back to the top. Here are a few moves the Saints can consider during the 2021 NFL Draft.

1. Add another weapon in the passing game

The Saints are picking No. 28 overall and will have a litany of options. However, adding a receiver to help Winston (or Taysom Hill, especially Taysom Hill) would be the smart move. General manager Mickey Loomis could have a hoard of intriguing receivers to pick from including Minnesota’s Rashod Bateman, Florida’s Kadarius Toney, Ole Miss’ Elijah Moore and Purdue’s Rondale Moore to name a few.

2. Trade up and be aggressive for a QB

Nobody will ever accuse the Saints of being low-key under Loomis. With eight picks at their disposal, perhaps it’s time to make a move up the board for a quarterback. If Trey Lance or Justin Fields starts to fall, Loomis should be burning the phone lines to get his replacement for Brees. It would be the kind of move that potentially sets up the franchise for 15 years.

3. Find another lockdown corner

The Saints struck proverbial gold in 2017 when they nabbed Ohio State’s, Marshon Lattimore. He’s become an elite cornerback, and maybe it’s time to pair him with a player commensurate to his own talent. This is a class loaded at corner, and if the Saints took Asante Samuel Jr. from Florida State, it would be a home run.
