Blue Jays fans have all kinds of jokes about Hyun Jin Ryu’s glute injury
When Toronto Blue Jays pitcher Hyun Jin Ryu had to leave the game with a glute strain, fans went with a lighthearted response.
No one likes to see an injury, especially not to an important player. When Hyun Jin Ryu had to come off the mound with an injury, Blue Jays fans had reason to despair.
After all, the Toronto pitching lineup has already taken a beating with Nate Person and Ross Stripling on the 10-day injury list along with T.J. Zeuch and Julian Merryweather. The team can hardly afford to lose their ace right now.
The Blue Jays confirmed it was a “minor right glute strain” that forced Ryu’s removal, though the length of a potential absence is unknown.

Sometimes, it’s just better to take a light-hearted approach. Otherwise, fans will have to face a harsh reality: Ryu’s troubled injury history hasn’t gone away.
The left-hander is a brilliant pitcher when available, but the risk in signing him ahead of the 2020 season after an All-Star season with the Dodgers was always about whether he could stay healthy. This latest issue isn’t a good sign.
Before leaving Sunday’s game, Ryu maintained a 3.00 ERA in four starts. He was 1-2 on the season. He pitched 3.2 innings while giving up three hits and logging five strikeouts against the Rays.
The rest of the Toronto pitching staff got the job done after Ryu’s departure. The Blue Jays beat Tampa Bay 1-0 thanks to a fifth-inning single from Santiago Espinal.
The series with the Rays now complete, the Blue Jays will welcome the Nationals to Toronto on Tuesday.
