Nick Saban understands the power of a conjunction when it comes to evaluating talent.

Alabama Crimson Tide head coach Nick Saban has been an NFL Draft war room before.

Before becoming the greatest head coach in college football history, Saban had spent eight seasons in the NFL.

Whether he was with the then-Houston Oilers, the Cleveland Browns or as the head coach of the Miami Dolphins, Saban knows the power of words when it comes to the draft process. He believes the two most important words are the conjunctions “and” and “but”.

Listen to the latest football gospel coming from the mouth of the Alabama football head coach.

Nick Saban understands the importance of “and” and “but” in the NFL Draft

Saban spells it out very simply. The conjunction “and” is used to augment one’s draft status, while “but” detracts from it. All things equal, “and” will elevate a player’s stock because he is a great teammate, a college graduate, possesses an incredible work ethic, etc. “But” will take away from a player. He is a bad teammate, he has a drug charge, he was in a domestic violence incident, etc.

What Saban continually emphasizes to his players is that from the moment a guy enters the draft process, all of the prospective teams are looking for a reason not to draft him. This is the biggest job opportunity, or series of them in most cases, in these players’ lives. Understanding the power of “and” and “but” will go a long way towards somebody being drafted, or falling down the board.

In everyday life, you can be the “and” or you can be the “but”; which one defines you?
