NFL Mock Draft: What happens if trades cause NFL-record run on QBs?
By Brad Weiss
The Los Angeles Chargers hit the lotto during the first round of the 2020 NFL Draft, as Oregon quarterback Justin Herbert proved to be ready for the next level. In fact, Herbert would go on to win the NFL’s Offensive Rookie of the Year honor and gave the Bolts a seamless transition from Philip Rivers at the most important position in sports.
As we look at their needs for the 2021 NFL Draft, offensive tackle is definitely the top priority, as they have to do everything they can to protect Herbert moving forward. When it comes to offensive tackles, there is Penei Sewell and Rashawn Slater, and then everyone else, so expect him to be the second OT off the board.
The Minnesota Vikings hold the No. 14 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, and they are another team that could certainly move around. They do not necessarily need a quarterback, and if one starts dropping, they could certainly be in play in terms of a trade with the likes of the Washington Football team or Chicago Bears.
However, if they stay at No. 14 overall, they need to improve on the interior of their offensive line, and they do so by getting the best interior lineman available this season. Alijah Vera-Tucker is an absolute mauler, and in terms of Day 1 starters at offensive guard, he is one of the few available this year.
The Atlanta Falcons traded away their No. 4 overall pick to the New England Patriots in our latest mock, grabbing the No. 15 overall selection, as well as a host of other draft capital. Though they fell 11 spots, they can still get an impact player at a major position of need, grabbing Virginia Tech cornerback Caleb Farley.
Farley is dropping a bit due to the fact he has some back issues, but those should be resolved in time for him to really help this team as a rookie. The Falcons took a major step back in 2021, but have revamped the coaching staff and front office, and still have some talented veterans to lean on to get this thing moving forward again.
