Kirk Cousins got the Aaron Rodgers treatment when the Vikings selected Kellen Mond, as Rick Spielman didn’t bother to share that information with his starting quarterback.

To be fair to Spielman, Cousins is not Rodgers-quality, so the Vikings have every right to select whoever they deem to be the best player available at the position. It’s unlikely the Vikings bring back Cousins after the 2022 season, as his contract is fully-guaranteed the next two years but runs out after that. While it’s tough to question the Vikings for giving Cousins his large deal in the first place, it’s clear he hasn’t performed up to the standard his financials might suggest.

Most advanced statistics suggest Cousins is an above-average passer. Where he struggles at times is his awareness and turnovers, which ultimately doom a Vikings team with very little room for error. Will a player like Mond prove better in that department? Minnesota was obviously intrigued enough to pull the trigger.

Rick Spielman doesn’t care if Kirk Cousins’ feelings were hurt

“It’s just like taking another player It’s like regardless of position if we take a player in the 3rd round or the 1st round I’m not calling a player and saying ‘We may take this guy here’,” Spielman said, per Chris Tomasson of the St. Paul Pioneer Press.

Mond showed promise as Texas A&M. His ability to extend plays from the pocket — or outside of it — is an attractive facet of his game. However, he struggles with the deep ball and his throw anticipation needs some work. Those are things Mike Zimmer and Co. think they can fix while they wait out Cousins’ contract. If not, there’s no harm, no foul.
