55. Scouting Report. Pick Analysis. player. TE. Pittsburgh Steelers. Zach Gentry. 2.

Many thought the Steelers would address the offensive line in the second round of the NFL Draft, considering how much of a step back the group has taken this offseason. They did not, but they did land the second-best tight end prospect in the entire class in Penn State’s Pat Freiermuth.

The rookie is an athletic tight end who can serve as a threat in the passing catcher and as a blocker. Through three seasons with the Nittany Lions, Freiermuth recorded 92 catches for 1,185 yards and 16 touchdowns. Freiermuth could very well be the tight end of the future that the team has been missing since Heath Miller retired.

As for whose spot Freiermuth will take, you can instantly rule out Eric Ebron. He did prove to be one of the team’s better tight ends they had rostered in recent years, and he is going to play a pivotal role in 2021. Do not forget the Steelers could go two tight end sets in Ebron and Freiermuth as well.

The odd man out could very well be Zach Gentry, Pittsburgh’s 2019 fifth-round pick out of Michigan. Gentry did not play much throughout his short tenure in Pittsburgh. This past November, Gentry was placed on injured reserve with a knee sprain.

All in all, Gentry has tallied one reception for four yards on one target through six games played.

Considering the talents of Freiermuth, the Steelers could choose to move on from Gentry, who is already placed third on the positional depth chart.
