3 veterans Cowboys could cut because of NFL Draft
By Scott Rogust
The Cowboys addressed the safety position this offseason after letting Xavier Woods leave in free agency for the Minnesota Vikings. Dallas signed veteran Jayron Kearse, and former Atlanta Falcons’ Damontae Kazee and Keanu Neal. Even though the Cowboys had plans to use Neal as a linebacker, that is hard to envision given the selections of Penn State’s Micah Parsons and LSU’s Jabril Cox in the NFL Draft.
Back to the safeties, the Cowboys added Israel Mukuamu out of South Carolina in the sixth round of the NFL Draft. Considering those additions, it is really hard to see veteran Darian Thompson get adequate playing time in 2021.
Thompson, a former third-round draft pick of the New York Giants, found a home in Dallas for the past three seasons. However, his play was far from perfect, especially last season. In 15 games, Thompson surrendered 20 receptions for 302 yards and four touchdowns on 27 targets, per Pro Football Reference.
Given the number of additions the Cowboys made to their safety corps, Thompson could very well be a cut candidate ahead of the 2021 season. Releasing Thompson will free up nearly $1.2 million in cap space for the Cowboys, per Spotrac.
